6 Day – Summit Wagagai Round Circuit
This 6-day adventure takes you to the summit of Mount Elgon (4,321m), an extinct shield volcano with the largest caldera in the world. The "Round Circuit" is the most complete route, taking you through montane forests, bamboo belts, and the strange Afro-alpine vegetation of giant Lobelias.
Daily Trekking Itinerary
Pick up from Kampala/Entebbe. Drive East through Jinja and Mbale. Arrive at Sipi Falls for acclimatization and briefing.
Drive to Kapkwai Exploration Centre. Begin the hike through the tropical forest. Reach Tumtum Cave (2,667m) for dinner and overnight camping.
A long trekking day (approx. 17km). Hike through the bamboo zone and heath land. Enjoy views of the vast plains before camping at Kajere River.
Walk along the crater rim with spectacular views. Descend slightly to Mude Cave Camp, the base camp for the final summit push.
Summit Day! Start early to reach Wagagai Peak (4,321m) at sunrise. View the massive caldera. Descend back to Mude Camp for the night.
Descend via the Sasa Trail to Budadiri. Meet the driver and transfer back to Kampala/Entebbe, marking the end of the expedition.
