10 Days – Summiting Rwenzori to Margherita Peak
A world-class mountaineering adventure to the highest point in Uganda. Trek through surreal landscapes of giant lobelias, bogs, and glaciers to reach Margherita Peak (5,109m) on Mt. Stanley. This is a challenging technical climb requiring crampons and ice axes.
Central Circuit Itinerary
Arrival in Entebbe
Meet & Greet at Entebbe Airport. Transfer to your hotel for a briefing. Optional shopping for last-minute gear.
Transfer to Kasese (Base Camp)
Drive West (6-8 hrs) passing Queen Elizabeth NP. Arrive in Kasese town at the foothills of the Rwenzoris.
Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut 2,652m
Start at Park HQ. Hike through Bakonzo farmland and montane forest. Cross the Mahoma River.
Nyabitaba to John Matte Hut 3,414m
Cross the Kurt Shaffer Bridge. Enter the bamboo zone and heather zone. Look for Red Duikers and White Colobus monkeys.
John Matte to Bujuku Hut 3,962m
Cross the Lower Bigo Bog (boardwalks). View Mt. Stanley and Mt. Speke if weather permits. Arrive at Bujuku Lake.
Bujuku to Elena Hut 4,541m
Steep ascent via Groundsel Gully to Scott-Elliot Pass. Climb metal ladders to the rocky Elena Hut (Base Camp for summit).
Summit Margherita & Descend 5,109m
Summit Day: Start at 2:00 AM. Cross glaciers (crampons/ropes required) to reach Margherita Peak. Descend to Kitandara Hut.
Kitandara to Guy Yeoman 3,261m
Climb Freshfield Pass. Enjoy views of Congo. Descend through the Mubuku River valley.
Descent to Nyakalengija
Final descent through bamboo and forest zones. Complete the circuit and transfer to Kasese/Lodge.
Return to Kampala
Drive back to Kampala/Entebbe for your outbound flight.
